NO SUCH THING AS NOISE ARTIST RESIDENCY
"NAUVOO" PROJECT
MAY 2022 - ONGOING
“Nauvoo” is an exploration/continuous research based on my residency at No Such Thing as Noise in Nauvoo, Illinois.

This project is ongoing as it finds it's identity (or lack of), or maybe outgrows it.
Like an art concept as a tamagachi, it's something alive that you take care of, it is tangible while not at the same time, it's digital but very much alive, within nature, yet fungible because it only makes sense if it's got a price tag / official proof of ownership (ego).
It takes shapes and means different things at different times.
It's a manifesto maybe.

NAUVOO, HEBREW WORD
MEANING
"THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL",
IS A RURAL TOWN IN WESTERN ILLINOIS.

NAUVOO IS INDEED A BEAUTIFUL PLACE IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE TO VISIT.
THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER RUNS ALONG SIDE OF IT, SEPARATING IT FROM IOWA AND MISSOURI.
MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS WAS THAT IT SEEMED REALLY RANDOMLY BEAUTIFUL TO ME, MOSTLY VAST FARMLAND WITH THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, THERE'S AN EERINESS TO THAT RIVER, I SWEAR.
I FOUND MYSELF THERE BECAUSE MY GOOD FRIENDS JACOB AND SHEENA HAD JUST PURCHASED A WILD PIECE OF PROPERTY IN NAUVOO AND WANTED TO EXTEND IT AS AN ARTIST RESIDENCY. THIS RESIDENCY WAS CALLED NO SUCH THING AS NOISE.
the motivating factor for my project was to use as much found/free material, I knew I wanted to make paintings, sculptures, and use the setting to dictate the direction. On top of that I wanted to film it on 16mm.
I was simultaneously going through a period of climate anxiety and not really knowing myself in a way as an artist and whole person.
I also liked the idea of everything being open to being something else

It's really nice to spend time with friends who are uplifting, encouraging, creative and supportive. This was one of the only experiences I've had that felt pure, I think we were all energized by each other and being authentic but like really wishing in earnest the best for the other person. Sheena and Jacob were such lovely hosts and I'm lucky to know them. Highly recommend friendships.

I have some really pretty 16mm footage of what is essentially tarps, rocks, stuff from the property that have been painted and placed strategically.
Honestly I wasn't really sure what to do for this project so I was winging it, I'm still winging it but it's been an interesting process.
I think it's more alive than I realize. Currently I have this tarp from the background that you see, on my couch as a way to cover the rips/dog pee.
I don't know, it's not that serious.
